課程概述

This course will introduce you to translation, both CE and EC, in a variety of professor and student selected topics and text types. 

課程目標
1. Eliminate basic English grammatical errors, especially misuse of mass/count nouns, random tense switching, and run-on sentences.
2. Learn basic syntactical, literary and rhetorical analysis.
3. Apply #2 to CE/EC translation.
4. Learn how to edit. You'll work in pairs through the year, one who does the draft, and another editing.
4. Develop a sense of professionalism, which is to say principled survival strategies and an understanding of the role a translator plays in society. 
課程要求
1. Come to class on time.
2. Hand in the translation homework on time.
3. Do the assigned reading or exercise on time.
4. Edit your translations to eliminate basic errors, then revise with other considerations (style, concision, etc.) in mind.
5. Do not copy the work of others. Plagiarism is usually immediately obvious, and will be rewarded with an immediate fail. If you have run out of time let me know and negotiate a new due date.
6. Do not let Google Translate do your work for you. It is also usually screamingly obvious when this happens.
7. As best as you are able on a given day, give the class your full and undivided attention. This means no web-surfing via laptop or cell phone.

Ye and Shi, Introducing Chinese English Translation.

Mona Baker, In Other Words: A Coursebook in Translation. Routledge, 2011. This is a classic text, quite straightforward, built around "levels of equivalence". The latest edition has a new chapter on ethics, on the largest level: the translator in society. Check Shulin. There is a CHINESE TRANSLATION.

Anthony Pym, Exploring Translation Theories. This is very advanced, but a good challenge if you are considering going on to do translation research.

Munday, Jeremy. Introducing Translation Studies. Straightforward.

Come on time, take the weekly quiz (and contribute 5 quiz questions twice during the term), submit work on time, do a presentation and put a record of it in the class Dropbox folder, keep a journal of what you've learned in this class.

Choose a 1000 character text that you think is worthwhile translating and produce an impeccable translation of it with annotations and discussion.

weekly homework 
50% 
Every week you'll do about 500 words, CE or EC, with a partner, and you'll produce a revision and keep a record of mistakes you make in a journal.
